Iron Oxide Nanoparticles for Drug Delivery

Ocean NanoTech has been awarded a $1.2 million contract from the NIH for the development of target-specific, drug-loaded iron oxide nanoparticles for targeted drug delivery and controlled drug release for breast cancer treatment. The breakthrough technology employed in this project will significantly improve drug efficacy, minimize toxicity and enable timely monitoring of drug delivery and therapeutic responses of human cancers by MRI.

In addition to the anti-tumor therapy, the iron oxide nanoparticles under this development also have greater potential for many other applications, including gene therapy, AIDS therapy and radiotherapy, in the delivery of proteins, antibiotics, virostatics and vaccines and as vesicles to pass the blood-brain barrier.
