Nanocrystal Toxicity Evaluation
Nanotechnology based materials continue to emerge and become part of our lives in this century. Industrial, biological, and medical applications become more and more apparent as new nanomaterials emerge in the market. With the exponential growth of nanotechnology, it becomes essential to develop new screening methods for the evaluation of potential hazards and toxicity of these particles. When materials go down to the nanoscale sizes, they often no longer display the same reactivity and characteristics as their corresponding bigger counterpart. Thus, a new field of toxicology must be developed for these nanocrystals (NCs) because traditional approaches may not be responsive to the nanostructure related biological activities. The studies on toxicological effect become more obvious because of various emerging new biological applications of NCs especially in the medical field.
Ocean NanoTech has embarked on the development of novel and innovative processes to determine NCs toxicity. This new and innovative project focuses on identifying and developing new processes, new reagent kits, toxicity simulation software, and corresponding manuals for assessing the corresponding health and environmental risks of new emerging nanocrystals such as quantum dots (QDs), magnetic nanocrystals, metal oxides, carbon nanotubes, and other types of NCs. The project involves both theoretical modeling as well experimental evaluation of toxicity of NCs. This project will lead to universal proprietary assay process, the toxicity predictive software, corresponding reagents, and the animal and plant test cells that can be used for in vitro toxicity studies.
